Supported Independent Living

At The Soul Shack, we offer permanent Supported Independent Living (SIL) in a welcoming rural setting near Cairns, where people can build a life filled with connection, adventure, independence and belonging.

Our homes are built on an Occupational Therapy foundation, with positive, person-centred supports that focus on supporting each person live life their way, build confidence, develop everyday skills and be an active part of their home and community.

Residents (Locals) have their own routines, goals, responsibilities, friendships and interests, while being supported by a consistent and experienced team who genuinely know them.

Life at The Shack

Life here is about much more than simply having somewhere to live. Locals are supported to take part in everyday household life, build independence and enjoy the things that make life meaningful.

Daily life may include following individual visual schedules and routines, sharing household responsibilities, caring for animals, cooking, shopping, spending time outdoors, enjoying regular campfires, swimming in local creeks and getting out into the community.

And yes... we still go to the pub, take trips away, enjoy outings and celebrations, and of course do karaoke in costumes — because some traditions simply can't be broken.

At The Soul Shack, locals are supported to make choices, develop skills, work towards personal goals and live as independently as possible, while having the support they need available around them.

Our approach is tailored to each individual. We focus on strengths, interests, communication needs, routines and personal goals rather than expecting everyone to fit into the same mould.

We currently have a limited number of permanent SIL vacancies available at The Soul Shack.

Finding the right home is a big decision. We welcome enquiries from participants, families, support coordinators and other members of a person's support network who would like to learn more about life at The Shack and whether it may be the right fit.
